Fraud, Extortion and Waste… The new Detroit Motto

The Detroit Free Press  02/26/12  M.L. Elrick

“Records Trace web of No Bid dealing”

Hours before FBI agents delivered subpoenas last fall seeking records from Wayne County headquarters, the director of a county health care program for needy people wired $400,000 of the program's money to a fledgling IT company that apparently did no work for the payment, according to records the Free Press obtained.

Though the company was paid in full before the work was completed, there is no evidence in records the Free Press obtained from HealthChoice that Medtrix, founded by Grundy's childhood friend Keith Griffin,  did any work for the money.

On Dec. 2, the FBI sent subpoenas to HealthChoice for records related to Grundy, Griffin and Griffin's companies.

By then, Grundy, a top aide to Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, already had been fired for failing to cooperate with an internal county investigation of his dealings.

The Medtrix deal raises questions that include whether the company was qualified to do the job for which it was paid and why payment was made before work was completed.

State records show that Griffin incorporated Medtrix less than a year before landing the HealthChoice deal.
Common Sense Review

Once again Detroit is spotlighted for fraud and corruption as the City seeks fund from the state to help in their financial problems.   It seems the patients are running the asylum.

It amazes me that in 2012, these municipalities have not installed oversight to prevent this incident.

It will be interesting if Wayne Co. will now bring in oversight after this incident and the extortion case with Wayne Co executive aid Tahir Kazmi.

Michigan’s budget is no excuse for the death of a child

Detroit Free Press  02/26/12  L.L. Brasier & Gina Damron

“He Wasn’t Tethered, Now Girl is Dead”

Joshua Brown was supposed to be wearing a tether on the day in January when, authorities say, he killed 12-year-old Kade'jah Davis.

Brown was on probation. He should have been tracked day and night.

But the electronic tether wasn't working.

That's because no one in the state's probation system ever activated it, according to records obtained by the Free Press.

Marlan also confirmed that both the probation agent and the agent's supervisor in the Brown case were suspended. Marlan said the department is hoping to complete both investigations this week.

Offenders can fall through the cracks when the MDOC is resource-challenged, Godbee said. In Detroit, about 25,000 people are under some type of MDOC supervision, and about 5,500 of those have violated parole or probation

"This is a very serious matter, and our Internal Affairs Section is aggressively investigating the circumstances surrounding the supervision of probationer Joshua Brown," Marlan said in an e-mail. "If this investigation shows the probation officer or the supervisor failed to follow department policies or work rules, then disciplinary action will be appropriately applied."

Brown was arraigned Feb. 5 on charges in Kade'jah's death, as was his mother, Heather Brown, 35. She is accused of driving her son to and from Kade'jah's house and faces a charge of being an accessory after the fact.
Common Sense Review
Why does a child have to die, to address faulty issues in probation or corrections?  Detroit Police Chief Godbee Jr.  in a lax manner states that offenders can fall through the cracks.. This is unacceptable!
The fact that 22% of the offenders violate the parole/probation is no excuse.

Joshua Brown has had a history of problem since the age of 10 years old, when he punched another child in the face.  It is a good assumption that his mother has created a foundation of anger in Joshua, the article noted that Heather Brown is facing charges of accessory after the fact.  Apparently, she drove Joshua, to and from the victim’s home.

We need to start addressing the issues of anger in children from single parent homes and demand accountability be those who are tracking criminals.

Michigan’s past leadership leads to fraud

“The ‘Taxpayer Subsidized Clean Energy Company Losing Money and Laying Off Workers While Execs Get Raises’ Story of the day”

In 2010, Michigan Governor/Obama economic advisor Jennifer Granholm called A123 Systems a Recovery Act success story (the key to being able to proclaim anything an unqualified “success story” is to do so before it’s had time to fail). The company and the government predicted that 3,000 more jobs would be added as clean tech reached critical mass.

In the nine months since David Prystash was named Chief Financial Officer of A123 Systems — the battery manufacturer that received $390.1 million in federal and state subsidies — the company has laid off 125 employees and had a net loss of $172 million through the first three quarters of 2011.

Yet, this month A123’s Compensation Committee approved a $30,000 raise for Prystash just days after Fisker Automotive announced the U.S. Energy Department had cut off what was left of its $528.7 million loan it had previously received.

Prystash wasn’t the only executive to see a big raise this month. Robert Johnson, vice president of the energy solutions group, got a 20.7 percent pay increase going from $331,250 to $400,000, while Jason Forcier, vice president of the automotive solutions group, saw his pay increase from $331,250 to $350,000. Prystash’s raise was 8.5 percent, going from $350,000 to $380,000.

Senator Debbie Stabenow visited an A123 factory in Michigan and announced that she would be seeking $2 billion more in taxpayer dollars for “battery research”

Common Sense Review

Any article that references Jennifer Granholm and Debbie Stabenow, you know that fraud will come out.   Granholm’s proclamation that Michigan was going to be the “Green” state basically put a target on our back for failure.

Granholm/Stabenow’s governmental theory is “if we can get a Federal Govt grant, the economy will grow”.

Man, did they get their leadership skills from a Cracker Jack box?

Obama’s Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights….. or a proclamation inspired by Charles Ponzi…

The Grand Rapids Press  02/23/12  AP

“Obama Administration Seeks online privacy Rules”

The Obama administration is calling for stronger privacy protections for consumers as mobile gadgets, Internet services and other tools are able to do a better job of tracking what you do and where you go.
Administration officials outlined a proposed "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights" on Thursday and urged technology companies, consumer groups and others to jointly craft new protections. Such guidelines will initially be voluntary for companies, but those that agree to abide by them could be subject to sanctions for any violations.

How strong the protections will be ultimately depends on what rules the different parties involved can agree on.

Separately, the FTC has recommended the creation of a "Do Not Track" tool to let consumers curb advertisers from studying their online activity to target ads.

Although officials expect many companies will agree to the new codes, allowing them to use that commitment in marketing materials, the report also called on Congress to pass new laws to require remaining companies to adopt such guidelines. Until then, enforcement will be limited to companies that say they would abide by the codes but fail to do so.

I have a copy of the plan:

     http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/privacy-final.pdf

The Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights advances these objectives by holding that consumers have a right to:
• Individual Control
• Transparency
• Respect for Context
• Security
• Access and Accuracy
• Focused Collection
• Accountability

Government agencies also play a vital role in enforcing the privacy protections in codes of conduct. The FTC is the Federal Government’s leading consumer privacy enforcement authority. Enforcement actions by the FTC (and State Attorneys General) have established that companies failures to adhere to voluntary privacy commitment.
Accountability refers to a company’s capacity to demonstrate the implementation of enforceable policies and procedures relating to privacy (whether adopted voluntarily or as a result of legal obligations). Accountability mechanisms include self-assessments, evaluations, and audits.

Common Sense Review

When the Fed Govt says they are VITAL protecting our personal information or rights…RUN!

This makes my skin crawl.. The Obama Administration wants to create protection rules against companies misusing citizens personal information, they why can I see this as a slippery slope issue.

Last month Citizens were upset with SOPA, so how does the govt get around that.  Create a warm fuzzy proclamation that is for the betterment of the people…

Consumer Bureau encourages irresponsible Consumers…

 The Hill.com  02/22/12  Peter Schroeder

“Consumer Bureau Targets Overdraft Fees”

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is taking a hard look at the overdraft fees charged by banks.

The agency announced Wednesday that it will seek information about the fees, commonly tied to checking accounts, and investigate whether consumers are being harmed by them.

“With today’s technologies, consumers have more opportunities to access their checking accounts and cause overdrafts,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. “But overdraft practices have the capacity to inflict serious economic harm on the people who can least afford it. We want to learn how consumers are affected, and how well they are able to anticipate and avoid paying penalty fees.”

Overdraft fees are levied on accountholders who attempt to withdraw funds that exceed what they currently have in an account. Citing “industry sources,” the CFPB said the average overdraft fee ranged from $30 to $35 in 2011 — up 17 percent over the previous five years. A 2008 study by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation found that consumers who overdrew 20 or more times per year ended up paying an average of $1,610 in overdraft fees.

The CFPB is also looking into the prevalence of banks processing larger transactions ahead of smaller ones, which could maximize the size of overdraft fees collected by the banks.

Commons Sense Review

You can’t balance a check book or you think you should be charged a fee for mismanagement of your account, no problem.  This is crazy! The banks are covering their assets.  When you become overdrawn many banks will cover that transaction and which the account hold is still responsible for and they add on a overdraft charge.  .

This is not an unreasonable process.   People don’t have a right to be irresponsible.

Obama creates a Willie Horton by halting deportation to Haiti

Media Matters  01/23/12  Solange Uwimana

“Media’s False Comparison Births Obama’s “Willie Horton””

On Sunday, the Miami Herald reported on the case of convicted felon Kesler Dufrene, a Haitian national who was the prime suspect in a triple murder committed after he was freed following the Obama administration's deportation stay to that country. Right-wing media are now using the case to attack President Obama and push the racially charged narrative that Dufrene is Obama's "Willie Horton." But the circumstances surrounding Dufrene's case cannot be compared to those of escaped murderer William Horton.

In a blog post calling attention to the story, Gateway Pundit's Jim Hoft accused Obama's "failed immigration policy" of "leav[ing] three more innocent people dead." Hoft wrote: "Thanks to the Obama administrations halt on deportations to Haiti last year three people are now dead, including a 15 year old girl." He added: "Can you say Willie Horton?"

According to the Miami Herald, Dufrene was ordered deported after being convicted of burglary; had his deportation held up because the Obama administration had suspended deportations to his native Haiti in the wake of the massive earthquake in that country; and was ordered released due to Supreme Court rulings preventing the indefinite detention of foreign nations who cannot be deported:

In February 2006, Dufrene was on probation for stealing a car when he was rearrested, this time for burglary. He was found hiding in a bedroom closet in a vacant house in Manatee County. Neighbors wrestled him down and held him until police arrived. Dufrene claimed he was cold and looking for shelter.

In July 2006, deputies again arrested him after a homeowner surprised him inside another Manatee County home. Five months later, Dufrene pleaded guilty to one of the burglaries and violating probation, and was sentenced to five years in prison.

In August 2007, records show, a U.S. immigration judge ordered him deported. He was released from state prison in September 2010, and handed over to immigration custody at West Miami-Dade's Krome Detention Center.

The federal government annually deported hundreds of Haitians convicted of felonies in the United States.

But after the devastating January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Obama administration announced it was indefinitely halting deportations to the country.

"Under binding Supreme Court precedent, ICE's authority to detain any individual is limited when the removal of that individual is not likely in the reasonably foreseeable future," the immigration agency's statement said.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2001 and 2005 that foreign nationals who cannot be deported may not be held in detention longer than six months. Deportations resumed in mid-January 2011 -- three months after Dufrene was released from custody under ICE supervision.

Common Sense Review

There is no false comparison.  The only difference between Willie Horton and Kesler Dufrene is that Dufrene is an illegal immigrant.

In both cases these people are released into the public as dangerous people.  What?!?!  Why are we allowing those who show aggressive tendencies out into public?  Then people are up in arms when they commit murders..  Aggressive tendencies not address or the person is not counseled to handle the tendencies, they will attack another…DUH!!!

Do you make the Grade in the ObamaCare Committee?

The Wall Street Journal  02/16/12  - Scott Gottlieb

“Meet the ObamaCare Mandate Committee”

Offended by President Obama's decision to force health insurers to pay for contraception and surgical sterilization? It gets worse: In the future, thanks to ObamaCare, the government will issue such health edicts on a routine basis—and largely insulated from public view. This goes beyond contraception to cancer screenings, the use of common drugs like aspirin, and much more.

Under ObamaCare, a single committee—the United States Preventative Services Task Force—is empowered to evaluate preventive health services and decide which will be covered by health-insurance plans.

The task force already rates services with letter grades of "A" through "D" (or "I," if it has "insufficient evidence" to make a rating). But under ObamaCare, services rated "A" or "B"—such as colon cancer screening for adults aged 50-75—must be covered by health plans in full, without any co-pays. Many services that get "Cs" and "Ds"—such as screening for ovarian or testicular cancer—could get nixed from coverage entirely.

The task force is also the only federal health agency to have the explicit legal authority to consider cost as one criterion in recommending whether patients should use a medical test or treatment.

The task force's problems are compounded by the fact that it is deliberately exempted from the rules that govern other government advisory boards and regulatory agencies. Thus it has no obligation to hold its meetings in public, announce decisions in draft form or even consider public comments. Consumers have no way to directly appeal its decisions. And health providers or product developers affected by its decisions can't sue it for recourse.

Common Sense Review

Let’s meet the US Preventive Services Task Force:

The Task force “strives to make accurate, up-to-date, and relevant recommendations about preventive services in primary care” and “recommend a services were benefits of the service must outweigh the harm” as well as “focuses on maintenance of health and quality of life as the major benefits of clinical preventive services”.

The USPSTF updated its definitions of the grades it assigns to recommendations and now includes "suggestions for practice" associated with each grade. The USPSTF has also defined levels of certainty regarding net benefit. These definitions apply to USPSTF recommendations voted on after May 2007.

Grade   Definition            Suggestions for Practice

A             The USPSTF recommends the service. There is high certainty that the net benefit is substantial.                Offer or provide this service.

B             The USPSTF recommends the service. There is high certainty that the net benefit is moderate or there is moderate certainty that the net benefit is moderate to substantial.              Offer or provide this service.

C             Clinicians may provide this service to selected patients depending on individual circumstances. However, for most individuals without signs or symptoms there is likely to be only a small benefit from this service.               Offer or provide this service only if other considerations support the offering or providing the service in an individual patient. Note: The following statement is undergoing revision.

D             The USPSTF recommends against the service. There is moderate or high certainty that the service has no net benefit or that the harms outweigh the benefits.            Discourage the use of this service.

I               The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of the service. Evidence is lacking, of poor quality, or conflicting, and the balance of benefits and harms cannot be determined.      Read the clinical considerations section of USPSTF Recommendation Statement. If the service is offered, patients should understand the uncertainty about the balance of benefits and harms.

How dare a group of 16 people dare to dictate the 307 million people in American what medical treatment they can receive.  I don’t know how they got this position, but how can they justify playing God.

Detroit’s leadership is cutting off the money and their people

The Detroit Free Press  02/16/12 Matt Helms

“Bing aims to end early-morning bus service in city”

Mayor Dave Bing wants to end early-morning bus service citywide to help steady Detroit's finances and stabilize the city's delay-plagued public transportation system, his office will announce today.

Bing's office said it will propose ending bus service between 1 and 4 a.m. citywide and reduce service times and lengthen waits between buses on dozens of routes. The cuts would take effect March 3.

About 120,000 people ride Detroit Department of Transportation buses daily, but only about 500 riders a day use buses on the nine routes that provide service 1-4 a.m., Brown said. Yet providing buses during those hours represents about 6% of DDOT's daily costs.

Riders worry that savings will come at a great cost to people dependent on buses to get to school, work, doctor appointments, grocery stores and the like. The cuts also could be brutal to people who work late shifts across the city.

"The mayor needs to understand that it's essential for the city to keep these buses running," said Darlene Butler, 56 Detroiter. "People aren't able to go to work or school or do their business without them."

Common Sense Review

Leadership is in short supply in Detroit.

Why would a city cut transportation for people to go to work when the city gets an income tax from those workers?

Out of the 38 bus routes in Detroit, keep the nine most used routes from 1am – 4am available for those who are commuting to work.  Simplify not cut.  The Detroit residences are punished for the lack of leadership from previous administrations.  So the question is why they wouldn’t want to leave?

Reviewing the Detroit municipality departments I see some questionable issues.

First, there are 6 departments directed to community relations. Consolidate these department to community centers that offer these programs into the individual communities which are set in the community and they must find their own funding through grants and donations.

Second, I see there is a Board of Ethics, to address complaints of unethical behavior by city employees.  Does Detroit have such a problem with ethical behavior that they need a full time board and staff?  Wouldn’t employee issues go through the employee’s direct supervisor and then Human Resources?

Third, a Department of Culture… Really! The people of Detroit need a department of Culture to help them educate themselves on their culture.

It seems that Detroit has been spending money like drunken sailor on department that gives off the “warm fuzzy” feeling yet is not financially sound.  Now the residences pay the price.

“Ficano aide charged with extortion, fraud:  Wayne Co. Exec Denies knowledge of alleged demands for trips, cash”

http://www.freep.com/article/20120215/NEWS02/302150001/Wayne-County-official-charged-with-extortion

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano denied knowledge of an alleged extortion plot in which one of his top aides is accused of demanding trips to exotic destinations, more than $80,000 in cash, cell phones for his children -- and a 49% stake in a contractor's business for a relative
.
The allegations were contained in a federal criminal complaint the FBI filed today against Tahir Kazmi, 52, of Rochester Hills, who resigned as the county's chief information officer hours before the U.S. Attorney's Office disclosed the extortion, fraud and obstruction of justice charges against him.

Ficano was not named in the federal complaint, but allegations indicate the FBI is investigating former Deputy County Executive Azzam Elder for possible corruption and former county economic development chief Turkia Awada Mullin, whose $200,000 severance deal set off a firestorm that has dogged Ficano for months.

According to Special Agent Beeckman, Kazmi used his position as chief information officer to pressure an IT vendor to give him between $80,000 and $90,000 in cash, as well as pay for trips to Hawaii, Orlando and Turkey. The vendor told the FBI that "Kazmi's demands grew over time and included forcing (the vendor) to pay for cellular telephones for Kazmi's children, airline tickets, hotel rooms and other things of value. Kazmi even demanded that (the vendor) give 49% of (the vendor's) company to Kazmi's brother-in-law."

“Commission votes to end “secret” money deal for country employees”

An ordinance to prevent county employees from getting secret, big-money deals was unanimously approved Thursday by the 15-member Wayne County Commission.

Commissioners were outraged last fall upon learning that former county economic development director Turkia Awada Mullin had been given a $200,000 severance payment upon voluntarily leaving her county job to become chief executive officer for the Wayne County Airport Authority, which oversees Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run airports.

Former deputy county executive Azzam Elder had a notarized document signed by Ficano in March 2009 promising him a separation payment in the $300,000 range, along with enhanced retirement benefits.

Former economic development director Mulu Birru was given a $200,000 severance payment upon leaving his position in early 2009.

Common Sense Review

So should it be a surprise to anyone that a Wayne county executive was arrested for extortion.  From the two other articles, the rats are jumping ship and they get paid to do so.  How does Wayne County justify in this economy paying $700,000 to people who have left their position working for the county?

“Climate Change” the foundation for Money Laundering

The New York Times  02/16/12 John M. Broder

“US Pushes to Cut Emissions on Some Pollutants that Hasten Climate Change”

Impatient with the slow pace of international climate change negotiations, a small group of countries led by the United States is starting a program to reduce emissions of common pollutants that contribute to rapid climate change and widespread health problems.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to announce the initiative at the State Department on Thursday accompanied by officials from Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico, Sweden and the United Nations Environment Program.

The plan will address short-lived pollutants like soot (also referred to as black carbon), methane and hydro fluorocarbons that have an outsize influence on global warming, accounting for 30 to 40 percent of global warming. Soot from diesel exhausts and the burning of wood, agricultural waste and dung for heating and cooking causes an estimated two million premature deaths a year, particularly in the poorest countries.
Scientists say that concerted action on these substances can reduce global temperatures by 0.5 degrees Celsius by 2050 and prevent millions of cases of lung and heart disease by 2030.

The United States intends to contribute $12 million and Canada $3 million over two years to get the program off the ground and to help recruit other countries to participate. The United Nations Environment Program will run the project.

Officials hope that by tackling these fast-acting, climate-changing agents they can get results quicker than through the laborious and highly political negotiations conducted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or U.N.F.C.C.C. That process, involving more than 190 nations, grinds on year after year with incremental political progress but little real impact on the climate.

Common Sense Review

Well being a resident here in Michigan we experience “Climate Change” so much that it is one of our mottos.  “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes”.   This theory of Climate Change has existed since the beginning of time.  Mother nature adjust the weather over regions as she see fit..

I see all the “Climate Change” as a manipulation of the mass.

They want to limit hydrocarbons (soot) found in crude oil.  The problem is crude oil is the foundation for all the poly products we use.  From clothing, laptops, to dishes refined crude is use to better our lives.

Methane which are emission from the ground, natural compost, cow and many of my relatives, are natural gases that are needed to keep the balance in our atmosphere.  The Earth’s atmosphere consist of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide,  argon and other small gases as well as water vapor.  This is a delicate balance.

Hydro fluorocarbons which are used in refrigeration, air conditioning and fire extinguishers, have become a part of our lifestyle.

I find it interesting that with all these factors of “Climate Change” that the US response is spending $12 million.

Why do I get the feeling that this fraud is the foundation for money laundering?

Obama: “Tax the Rich” a manipulation of the “Occupy” crowd

The Wall Street Journal  02/14/12 John D. McKinnon

“Obama Proposes ‘Buffet Rule’ for Wealthy”

In one of the most eye-catching of President Barack Obama's proposals Monday to change the tax code, he suggested replacing the widely disliked alternative-minimum tax with a 30% minimum tax on people earning at least $1 million, based on the so-called Buffett Rule.

Other proposals in his long-range principles—designed to raise at least $1.5 trillion over 10 years—include eliminating breaks for private-equity firms, corporate jets and oil and gas companies.

In Mr. Obama's proposal, the AMT eventually would be replaced with a 30% minimum tax on incomes over $1 million. That follows assertions by investor Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. that millionaires should pay more to the government; he has pointed out he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.

Some tax experts questioned whether such a switch could be made without raising revenue elsewhere. "It's hard to see how the Buffett Rule, at least as currently discussed, would cover anywhere near the entire cost of repealing the AMT," said Donald Marron, a former adviser to President George W. Bush who is director of the Tax Policy Center of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution. He estimated complete repeal would cost at least $100 billion a year in lost revenue, perhaps more if Bush-era tax breaks are extended beyond 2012.

Common Sense Review

This is a ridiculous proposal. I find it complete ignorance when anyone talks about creating law or regulation to our tax code to “make it fair”.

Even on a secure foundation, if constant rebuilding will damage that foundation.  Sometimes looking at the foundation of a structure and see that it is weak must be broken down and recreated.

Obama’s need to “Tax the Rich” on a surface is a ploy to fuel those who are flaming the fires of the “Occupy” crowd, when he is actually not going to do it… Obama needs the rich..  His campaign is not being funded by the “Middle Class”.

The incredibly educated “Occupy” crowd doesn’t see this, so how educated are they really?!?!

Terrorist are granted access to the US from Fed Govt with open arms

Accuracy in Media  02/15/12  Lyle J. Rapacki, PH.D

“Middle East Terrorists Operating Along Arizona Southern Border”

The southern border of Arizona remains unsecure with a growing threat from those who detest America in every way and intend to destroy our country. This threat is not simply Mexican drug dealers, although they are posing an ever increasing and violent presence as they move into Arizona, and then launch their activities into257 known American cities, according to the National Association for Retired Border Patrol Officers.  A more ominous threat of the unsecure southern border into the U.S. is the increased activity of Middle Eastern terrorists. Since Oct, 2003, Border Patrol agents in the Tucson, AZ sector apprehended 5,510 illegals from countries other than Mexico, Central or South America.

The Arizona desert is littered with evidence of illegals coming from countries that are violently opposed to and stated enemies of America; especially countries like Venezuela, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Libya, Somalia, and the spreading al-Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah. Further evidence demonstrates the growing relationship and cooperation by these terrorist groups and drug cartels, as well as criminal gangs like MS-13.

FOR YOUR ANALYSIS AND CONSIDERATION

1.       1.  The U.S. Congress Committee on Foreign Affairs received testimony on February 2nd, 2012, that demonstrated Iran’s growing influence along the U.S. Border south of Arizona. Michael Braun, a former chief of operations for DEA, testified that Hezbollah has developed strong and sophisticated relationships with Mexican drug cartels.

2.      2.  There is growing “chatter” that Iran will strike the United States from within if Iran’s nuclear program is attacked

3.     3.    Besides Iran and Hezbollah, South American satellite terrorist-sponsoring nations like Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua are assisting with the massing and training of terrorists, weapons (including medium-range missiles), logistics and other support.

4.      4.   Adnan ash-Shukrijumah, one of the world’s most wanted terrorists, it was learned, was chosen by bin Laden to serve as the field commander for the terrorist attack on U.S. soil. The code name: “The American Hiroshima” plan was affixed.

5.    5.   The Federal Government is proclaiming how border apprehensions are down 40%. This is misleading. What is not being shared with the public is the fact that Fed policy is to count only selected groups and allow others to go free or to turn south back to Mexico counting neither category.

Commons Sense Review

Terrorist are coming over here undetected yet our govt know these are some of the most dangerous people.  Yet apparently it is not important to the Federal govt to protect the people of American from these mentally disturbed individuals.

It is so frustrating to know that those we pay to govern us don’t care about our safety.

“Class sends handmade holiday Cards to Prisoner”

A Queens teacher forced her fifth-graders to make holiday cards for a repulsive pen pal — a jailed boyfriend who has a taste for child porn and a conviction for gun possession.

Melissa Dean instructed the youngsters at Public School 143 in Corona to draw cards for her beau in December because she “thought it was a nice thing to do,” investigators said.

But a guard at Groveland Correctional Facility in upstate Livingston County disagreed, intercepting the 27 letters for John Coccarelli and alerting Dean’s principal.

“It was bad judgment,” said the city’s special commissioner of investigation, Richard Condon. “She certainly did not have permission.”

Instead, they were sent to Coccarelli, who has been collared for possession of a loaded 9-mm. semiautomatic pistol and violating an order of protection.

Coccarelli, 33, has a disturbing criminal record. In 2008, he was busted in Nassau County for weapons possession and child porn after police found a disk and laptop with nearly 50 sexually explicit images of underage kids.

Then in 2010, he pleaded guilty to violating a restraining order. He isn’t eligible for parole until May.

Common Sense Review

Our society has gone crazy.  A elementary teacher who is well educated in the development of children as well as the psychology pedophiles and this is what happens.  Any more it seems that in our society the lonely and those who don’t curb their sexual urges are aggressively hunting the children of our world.

There's "no credible or specific" evidence of an Iranian terror plot targeting the U.S., but officials are closely tracking the threat, the country's top homeland security official said Wednesday.

On Capitol Hill to pitch her agency's 2013 budget, homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano faced questions on Iran from House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Pete King (R-L.I.) and colleagues.
Napolitano said there's no proof Iran is poised to strike, but called the rogue regime "a threat that bears watching."

A blast in Bangkok linked to Iranians involved "sticky bombs" attached to vehicles, which experts say could be payback for the assassination of nuclear scientists Tehran blames on Israel.

But Thai police say they arrested two Iranian men after the accidental explosion, including one whose legs were blown off. Two more people were being sought.

In the Indian incident, which injured a diplomat's wife going to pick up her kids, a bomb was attached to a minivan with magnets - the same type of devices used to kill several Iranian scientists.

Common Sense Review

Napolitano needs to step down.  Everyone knows Iran is a threat.  It is common knowledge that the information given to Americans are just a small percentage of what the actually threat to the US.  So to sit there asking for Budget 2013 approval and saying Iran is not a threat, is a complete insult to the intelligence to the people of the United States.

Obama’s new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will protect you from yourself…

The Washington Post 02/16/12 Ylan Q. Mui

“Consumer agency wants oversight of debt collectors, credit bureaus”

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Thursday sought to bring debt collectors and credit bureaus under its purview, marking the first time the often controversial industries would be subject to federal supervision.

Under its proposed rule, the CFPB would oversee the nation’s largest debt collectors, the primary credit reporting agencies such as Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, and other lesser-known consumer reporting agencies. It is the first attempt by the watchdog agency to define which businesses in the vast swath of nontraditional financial institutions will be subject to the same examination process as banks.

“This oversight would help restore confidence that the federal government is standing beside the American consumer,” CFPB Director Richard Cordray said in a statement.

The power to oversee such firms and other nonbanks was a key component of the new agency’s design, and the CFPB has quickly flexed its muscle. It has already convened hearings on payday lending and plans to propose new rules for mortgage servicers.

Common Sense Review

Why does the govt need to control collection and credit agencies?  What do they expect to oversee?  All I see is the slippery slope of Fed govt controlling every aspect of commerce.

I am not seeing the harm of people making their own choices and taking responsibility of those choices… We need to stand for self-responsibility.

The Rapid mass transit may get $14.7 million in tax dollars for Silver line, after getting $92.7 million millage in 2011…

The Grand Rapids Press 02/16/12 – Zane McMillin

“The Rapids’s Silver Line may get $14.7 million boost”

The Rapid bus system's Silver Line project could get a $14.7 million boost following a funding recommendation today by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

LaHood gave a nod to the Silver Line, which, once complete, will be the city's first Bus Rapid Transit line, as part of $2.2 billion in federal funding recommendations for new or continuing transit projects across the nation during the 2013 fiscal year.

The Silver Line is included in a 20-year master plan meant to provide a framework for the Interurban Transit Partnership, or ITP, which operates The Rapid in Grand Rapids and five surrounding communities.

GR Press 05/03/11 – Kyla King

The Rapid millage increase approved by 136 votes

The improvements will be made gradually over the next five years with the full millage levy eventually raising $15.6 million a year. One-third of the millage increase will go toward operating the Silver Line route

Common Sense Review

Unfortunately this happens more times than not.  The Rapids came to the people last year for a mileage to create the Silver line, which against my beliefs, passed.  Then the fed govt give them a grant.

In 2011 the Rapid through the vote, was given $92.7 million over 5 years.

HERE'S WHAT THE MILLAGE BUYS:

Total annual cost of proposed improvements: $3.7 million
The money would be used to pay for these improvements over five years:
• Increase weekday bus frequency to 30 minutes on all routes from 5 a.m. To 7:15 p.m.
• Run all routes until 11:15 p.m. weekdays
• Extend weekday evening service to 12:15 a.m. on the seven most productive routes
• Improve weekday peak frequency service to 15 minutes on the six next most productive routes
• Add Bus Rapid Transit on Division Avenue
• Extend Saturday evening service to 10 p.m. on all routes except Woodland Mall/Airport Route 17
• Extend GVSU Campus route to Central Station on weekdays at current frequency
• Increase weekday evening frequency to 30-minutes on six next most productive routes to 11:15 p.m.
• Increase weekday evening frequency to 30-minutes on seven most productive routes to 12:15 a.m.

Now the Fed govt may give them $14.7 million for the Silver line, so should we expect to get $14.7 million back to the taxpayers?

I doubt it.  In 2011, the Rapid stated that one-third ($30,591,000) of the millage increase will go toward operating the Silver line.  So now two-thirds ($61,109,000) plus $14.7 million goes into an account for WHAT?

Can anyone say Slush fund?

Are Iowa hiring practices discriminatory? or applicants don’t qualify?

NBC 12 – 02/17/12 – Ryan J. Foley, Associated Press

“Denied Jobs, blacks in Iowa test new bias theory”

After years of litigation, a judge will soon decide whether to grant thousands of black employees and job applicant’s monetary damages for hiring practices used by every agency of Iowa state government that they say has disadvantaged them for decades.

The plaintiffs - up to 6,000 African-Americans passed over for state jobs and promotions dating back to 2003 - do not say they faced overt racism or discriminatory hiring tests in Iowa, a state that is 91 percent white. Instead, their lawyers argue that managers subconsciously favored whites across state government, leaving blacks at a disadvantage in decisions over who got interviewed, hired and promoted.

Vilsack's successor, Democratic Gov. Chet Culver, issued an executive order requiring agencies to improve the diversity of the workforce. State officials called that evidence of progress, but class lawyers argued it turned out to be ineffective because rules meant to prevent bias still were not followed.

In a brief submitted in December, plaintiffs' lawyers sought lost wages of about $67 million minus what they earned in the meantime.

Common Sense Review

This is not about Equality, it is about Money.  There isn’t enough information to decide why these people were not hired due to their race.  Background Check, Credit Check, Experience, etc. are all factors for hire.

However, the key that focuses on this suit is about money comes from the Plaintiffs own attorney’s brief that states the clients are seeking $67 million in lost wages minus what they earned in the meantime.  What?!?!

The suit is regarding the issue of discrimination.  However the brief basically assumes the people would get the jobs if race was not considered.  Well wait a minute, there is not guarantee that these people would have gotten the job, but for their race.

There are too many questions without answers.  How many white, Asian, Hispanic people were not hired or advance for promotion in the state of Iowa since 2003?

Now in 2007, Gov. Culver’s executive order instructed agencies to create a more diverse workforce.  How many black, Hispanic, Asians, and whites were hired in the 4 years from the executive order?  How many turned away?

Theft of Greek Artifacts or is the Greek govt having a clearance sale?… “Everything must go!”

Yahoo! News  - 02/17/12  - John Hadoulis

“Armed robbery at ancient Olympia, Minister quits”

Greek Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos resigned on Friday after masked armed robbers stole more than 60 objects of "incalculable" value, including a gold ring, from a museum in ancient Olympia.

Sixty-eight objects were whisked from a museum dedicated to the ancient Olympic Games after two masked men immobilised the museum's sole female guard as she arrived for her early morning shift, officials said.

The police said "bronze and clay objects and a gold ring" had been removed from display cases at the museum, which is built on a forested hilltop on the outskirts of the small town of Olympia.

"There were two of them, and they had a gun," Olympia Mayor Thymios Kotzias told Flash Radio.
Kotzias said no security staff are actually present between 6:00 am and 7:00 am, when the neoclassic late 19th century building is guarded by an electronic alarm.

This is the second major theft to embarrass Greek culture officials in a month.

The government is currently in negotiation with the EU, IMF and the European Central Bank for a new 130-billion-euro ($170-billion) bailout in addition to a 100-billion-euro debt writedown from private creditors.

Common Sense Review

Wow! Does this sound fishy?  During the Greek govt’s financial struggle to balance their budget by begging the European Central Bank for a bailout, the Greek artifacts are stolen from a museum.

When a person gets themselves into a financial difficulty what is one of the things they do?  Sell their belongings.  So is the Greek govt selling artifacts to private collector under the guise of theft?

My theory is not too farfetched…

ACLU argues in GR Panhandling is a Freedom of Speech….

The Grand Rapids Press  02/16/12 – John Agar

“Panhandling is protected speech, ACLU attorney tells federal judge in Grand Rapids”

The attorney for two men challenging the state’s panhandling law was encouraged this afternoon after a federal judge suggested that peaceful begging could be protected by the First Amendment.

Attorneys for the city of Grand Rapids and state of Michigan argued that the state had legal and valid reasons for the ban, but U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker said: “We have yet to identify a case that says, ‘You’re right.’”

In court, she said the ban “is a content-based restriction on speech in a public forum, and is subject to the highest level of scrutiny. Here, what a person says determines their guilt or innocence.”

Jonker, who expects to file a written opinion once both sides have the chance to file additional briefs, asked lawyers for the city and state why a homeless person asking for money is any different than, say, a fireman approaching others with a boot asking for charitable donations.

Ann Sherman, an assistant state attorney general, insisted the case wasn’t about speech, but a ban on solicitations for “immediate donations (under) duress, coercion and fraud.”

Sims said he was hopeful after listening to the arguments.

“I don’t harass people. I’m basically, ‘Hey, can you spare a little change?’ If you can’t, go on your business.”

Common Sense Review

Arg! The Comments from the Fed Judge seems to have his mind made up.  The distinction between freedom of speech and freedom of action needs to be defined.    Begging or panhandling is an action.

Are we seeing judicial activism?  Judge Jonkers questioning City and State attorney on the difference between homeless panhandlers and the firefighters raising fund for charity, shows that he doesn’t a distinction.
Street people in Grand Rapids have more organizations to help with basic care.  God’s Kitchen, Degage, The Mission, Thresholds and Mel Trotter offer programs to help those in needs.  So why these people begging and what are they doing with the money?

What is not told is that both men are not homeless. Sims even says “I don’t harass people” but his arrest record shows four arrests for trespassing. So he doesn’t recognize a person’s right to private property.

James Speet has been arrest twice for Assault and Battery, Operating while intoxicated and Engaging in Illegal business or Occupation.

These two men show through their actions that they have an aggressive nature toward others.

Which brings me to the issue, are the right of those who don’t respect our US laws more important than the society as a whole?

GM’s success on the backs of the people and the union workers get profit sharing….

Woodradio 106.9 FM & 1300AM  02/16/12

“GM: Largest Profit Ever”

General Motors earned its highest profit ever last year.

The 103-year-old company made $7.6 billion in 2011, up 62 percent from 2010.
The company says union workers will get $7,000 profit-sharing checks.

GM lost $700 million before taxes in Europe, and lost $100 million in South America.  IHS Automotive analyst Mike Wall said beyond their foreign struggles, "they're protecting cash in case they run into any headwinds, there are some significant cost outlays in launching new products."

Many would say that the govt was right to bailout GM, however is the bailout continuing.

GM announced Wednesday that it had paid back the $8.1 billion in loans it received from the U.S. and Canadian governments. Of that, $6.7 billion went to the U.S. treasury.

Yet the subsidies continue in promoting the Chevy Volt:

The total amount of state and federal subsidies for each Chevy Volt sold is as much as $256,824 per vehicle according to a fiscal analysis by Michigan's Mackinac Center for Public Policy. All for a car that only costs $39,828.

Common Sense Review

Do not come out bragging about your success when you need others to succeed.   I am not impressed that GM has profited $7.6 billion dollars when you needed over $8.1 billion in taxpayer money to succeed.

To add insult, the taxpayers had to pay for the UAW workers to keep their jobs and now each are getting $7,000 in profit sharing checks.  Gee, how about giving that $672 million back to the people, as a gesture of thanks for bailing out their butts….

European countries learn… No Pay, No Grade: If you don’t pay your bills, your credit grade lowers

The New York Times  02/14/12

“6 European Nations Get Downgrades”

Moody’s Investors Service cut the debt ratings on Monday of six European countries, including Italy, Spain and Portugal, and became the first big ratings agency to switch Britain’s outlook to negative.

Moody’s downgraded Spain to A3 from A1 with a negative outlook; Italy to A3 from A2 with a negative outlook; and Portugal to Ba3 from Ba2 with a negative outlook. The agency also lowered the ratings for Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Moody’s revised to negative its outlook on Britain, France and Austria, which have the agency’s top Aaa rating.

Euro zone finance ministers are expected to meet Wednesday night and give provisional approval to a 130 billion euro (about $170 billion) bailout, but technical, legal and political problems still plague a rescue that is unpopular in Greece and in its creditor nations.

Common Sense Review

Good Lord people,  If we don’t make a change this is where we are going to be.  Let’s break it down to the personal level. If I were to spend beyond my means, and did not pay my bills on time, my credit rating would go down. DUH!

So how it is that govt official don’t understand this idea. You cannot spend out of this problem.

For Sale, Everything must go…. City of Detroit

The Detroit News  02/13/12

“Detroit crisis may force sale of crucial assets”

Pontiac sold the Silverdome, Wayne County got rid of golf courses, and Dearborn unloaded a senior citizen complex in Florida.

Facing mounting debt and the prospect of a state-appointed emergency manager, the city is looking at all options to shed expenses and raise revenue. If city officials can't come up with a viable budget plan, an emergency manager would have the power to sell assets as part of a financial takeover of Detroit.

City Assets for Sale

·         Water Dept.
·         D-DOT
·         Health Dept
·         Lighting Dept
·         Detroit –Windsor Tunnel
·         Golf Courses
·         Coleman Young Airport
·         Cobo Center

Common Sense Review

I invite everyone to the Grand Opening of Ginger’s Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Bait Shop…
Who do you think is going to buy these govt entities?  Yes, I’ll take the D-DOT for the low, low price of $50,000…

Or I will pay $50 million for the water dept and then get dictated by the faulty City how you need to run the entity…

This is ridiculous.. Look for listing on Ebay and Craigslist..

“Grand Rapids spending from Transformation Fund hits $2.5 million this year”

The purchase of three ‘quick-response vehicles’ for the fire department will push spending from the city’s Transformation Fund to almost $2.5 million in the current fiscal year, according to a report.

Other “transformation” spending from the current year:

10 police officers – The fund will pay $1 million for the cops this year and each of the next three years, with hopes that the police department transforms operations by the 2015-2016 fiscal year to maintain service levels without those 10 officers.

15 firefighters – The fund is paying about $200,000 this year for two firefighters, with a federal grant covering the cost of 13 others. The fund is saving what it would have spent on those 13 firefighters and will use that money to pay the firefighters once the grant expires.

Cemetery sustainability – The fund paid $20,000 for a consultant to recommend how to eliminate a general-fund subsidy to the cemeteries. City officials will explore outsourcing some cemetery functions.

Golf course sustainability – The fund paid $20,000 for a consultant to recommend how to make Indian Trails Golf Course profitable. A report advised adding a driving range and shortening the course to nine holes, and also encourages a management partnership with Kent County.

Police/fire consolidation - The fund is paying $69,000 for a consultant to study consolidation potential with Kentwood and Wyoming.

“Quick-response" fire trucks - City Commission this week OK’d spending $872,900 of Transformation Fund money on three miniature fire trucks that Fire Chief Laura Knapp hopes can help her department become more efficient.

Fee study – The fund is paying $50,000 for a consultant to analyze city fees and fines to make sure the full cost of services are being reimbursed. A report is expected in March.

3-1-1 communication system – City Commission has OK’d spending $225,000 in Transformation Fund money to explore a 3-1-1 customer service system that would give people a single point of access into City Hall.

Transformation Fund money comes mostly from a 5-year income-tax increase that Grand Rapids voters approved in 2010. Administrators plan to spend the money in ways that they think will re-invent public services, making the city financially sustainable for the future.

Michael Moore, Weinsteins in "Fahrenheit 9/11" deal

-Michael Moore and Hollywood titan Harvey Weinstein have settled a lawsuit filed by the controversial director, who alleged that “financial deception” resulted in him being rooked out of millions in profits from the hit documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11.”

Moore claimed in his lawsuit that he was owed a minimum of $2.7 million in connection with “Fahrenheit 9/11.” In denying Moore’s claim, the Weinsteins branded their former collaborator as greedy, noting that the filmmaker has pocketed more than $20 million from the 2004 film.

“Michael Moore visits Occupy Denver protesters”

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore told Occupy Wall Street supporters in Denver on Thursday to be mindful of people trying to incite violence within the movement, saying they could be working undercover for the government.

"I do very well," Moore responded. "Because I do well, I want taxes raised on people who do well, including mine."

Common Sense Review

I wonder how the “Occupy” people feel about one of “them” making $20 million off the worst national tragedy since Pearl Harbor.   Gee that would make him a part of the 1%.  On top of that, he wants more money so he sues Harvey Weinstein and is awarded $ 2.7 million…..

So did Moore sell out or lied to the “Occupy” masses?

Megadeth for Santorum….

The heavy metal legend reported from the Democratic National Convention for MTV News at Madison Square Garden during the 1992 election but is now singing his ax from the Republican Party and endorsing former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

“I’m just hoping that whatever is in the White House next year is a Republican,” Mustaine told MusicRadar.com. “I can’t bear to watch what’s happened to our great country.

Everybody's got their head in the sand. Everybody in the industry is like, ‘Oh, Obama’s doing such a great job...’ I don't think so. Not from what I see.”

Blasting Republican front-runner Mitt Romney for his five sons' multimillion-dollar trust fund and Newt Gingrich for being “that angry little man,” he says he settled on Santorum.
